How We Research

Updated on

Every guide on FancyFolder starts with one question: will this product work for the person who is shopping for it? For our fan guides, that means your room, how much noise you can live with and how you want to control the fan.

Here is how we answer it.

1. We start with your room

A tower fan takes up little floor space, while a pedestal fan stands taller and can tilt. Garage and shop fans are a different kind of fan again.

We check the height, the speed settings and the noise level the maker lists. When your room limits the choice, we say what to look for.

2. We compare specs and features

We look at the height or blade size, the number of speeds, the motor type (AC or DC), the noise level the maker lists, oscillation, remote and smart controls, timers and whether it comes assembled. Dreo, Lasko, Levoit and Vornado describe their fans in their own words, so we name the brand for every claim.

We also note the warranty terms the maker lists.

3. We look at buyer feedback

We read through what buyers report after using a fan. We look for patterns, like rattles, remotes that stop working, fans that wobble, loud top speeds and hard assembly.

One angry review doesn't sink a product. A pattern does.

4. We score each product

Our score weighs specs, features and buyer feedback against what you're shopping for. A product that's great for one reader may score lower in a guide written for another.

Scores spread out on purpose. A 10 is rare.

5. We keep pages up to date

Products change, and some disappear from stores. Fans come in many sizes and colors under one name, so we check each model and we only link new units.

We check each model against the federal Consumer Product Safety Commission recall list, not just the brand. We skip unknown brands with no track record and any fan with a known recall.

When we update a guide, the "Updated on" date at the top changes with it.

What our picks are not

Our picks are research, not lab tests. We don't claim to have used every fan we cover.

Fans plug into household power and have moving blades. We say to unplug a fan before you clean it and to follow the maker's manual, and we don't promise that any fan is safe to leave running unattended.

We make no health claims and no promises about running cost or how long a fan will last, and we label maker claims as the maker's claims.
